This post contains affiliate links. As part of PB & J Girl’s homeschool curriculum, we’re reading some classics. The first one we read this year was Animal Farm by George Orwell. I had read this before in high school, so I wondered if reading it again three decades later would cause me to look at the book differently. However, I found it a depressing read as I did when I was younger.
About Animal Farm by George Orwell
This book is set on a farm and is about animals who revolt against the drunk farmer who “cares” for them. Life becomes so insufferable for the animals that they run the farmer and his wife off the farmer. Then, the animals establish new rules to make their lives better, and for awhile, they are very successful. However, over the years, their new way of ruling breaks down and life changes dramatically.
At first, all on the farm agree that all animals are equal, but little by little, that changes. Soon, some animals make their way to the farm house, and they become the “leaders” who are better than others. Unfortunately, the leaders have their own interests at the forefront.
My Thoughts on Animal Farm
Overall, I found this book depressing, just as I previously did. In the book, history slowly repeats itself. While Orwell wrote this as a commentary on Communism, I find much of the story is applicable for today, which proves the point that history keeps repeating. Sometimes I wonder if we learn nothing.
Beyond my jaded interpretation of this book, Cuddle Bug enjoyed it. She loved watching the subtle trickery of the animals and the manipulative way they ruled the farm. PB & J Girl is glad she read the book, but she thought Fahrenheit 451 was much better.
I give Animal Farm by George Orwell 4 out of 5 stars on the Mom’s Plans’ scale.
